Configuring your checkout
Configuring sales, GST and VAT tax
Tax calculations are very flexible with RealCart. The program permits you to configure unlimited taxation scenarios by allowing tax jurisdictions by City, State, Province, VAT and GST. To add a tax just follow these steps:
- Start RealCart.
- Open the Checkout Wizard by clicking the Cash Register button on RealCarts large toolbar.
- Click the Tax tab.
- Click the Add button.
- Select a jurisdiction from the pull-down menu in the Add Tax dialog.
- To enter a city just select City as the tax jurisdiction.
- Enter the name of the City in the city field.
- Choose the State that the City is in.
- Enter the tax rate as a decimal fraction. (e.g. a 7.875% tax rate would be entered as .07875.)
- Click OK.
- Click OK (or Next > if configuring for the first time.)
- Publish your store.
Remember that the tax for your city will only work if your customer enters the name of the city exactly as you have it. In the example above you may want to configure additional spellings of the city following all of the same steps above. In this case you would probably define the same .07875 tax rate for the following variations of the spelling:
- OKC
- O.K.C.
- Okla City
- Okla. City
- OK City
You can be as encompassing as you like. The more variations you include the less likely it is that someone will enter their contact info and avoid paying the proper tax. State/Province tax is different due to the fact that the states are already in the program as well as the on-line cart. If your customer chooses a state that you have defined as taxable then they will be charged the appropriate tax.
Troubleshooting
The most common problems with tax is the failure to define any products as taxable at the bottom of the product wizards Pricing tab. If you place a test order and none of the products that you have added to the cart are set as taxable then no sales tax will be added. Be absolutely sure you have indicated that a product is taxable before you attempt to test your tax settings in a test order situation.
Another common problem is entering the wrong number for the tax rate. The tax rate should be a decimal fraction meaning it should be a number less than 1 and should be entered like one of these examples below:
- 6% should be entered as .06
- 7.5% should be entered as .075
- 5 3/4% should be entered as .0575
- 8% should be entered as .08
Entering a tax rate of 6.50 in the tax rate field, for example, is the equivalent of charging 650% tax.
