Customizing your store
Backups are good
Backing up your Store
We simply cannot stress enough the importance of backing up your store. Even if you arent actively customizing it. Hard drives can crash due to age or viruses. Stuff happens. Keep your store safe and secure by backing it up on a regular basis. To back up your store navigate to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\RealCart.com\RealCart\Stores
(Of course if you installed RealCart to a different drive or to a different directory then you will need to locate the Stores folder in its current location. The location above is the default.)
Copy your stores folder to another location. Another hard drive, a ZIP Disk or even a CDR or CDRW. Unless you have renamed your store or started a new store from scratch your store folder is called My Store.
The Default Store does not contain any of your company or product data and does not need to be backed up. Any other folders in the Stores folder besides Default Store are stores that have been created and should be copied to a safe backup location.
If you are using the software on more than one computer, e.g. a notebook computer or home computer then you will want to copy the same store folder back to your second computer and place it back into the Stores folder.
If you have not backed up your store and you lose the store data on your hard drive you cannot retrieve a copy of the store itself from your web site. The only files that get published to your web site are the finished pages of your store. Your store database is not uploaded to the server and therefore must be backed up in the event of data loss on your PC.
Backing up your custom theme
To back up your template theme(s) navigate to the following folder:
C:\Program Files\RealCart.com\RealCart\Templates
(Of course if you installed RealCart to a different drive or to a different directory then you will need to locate the Templates folder in its current location. The location above is the default.)
Locate the folder that contains your custom theme and make a copy of it to a different location. Another hard drive, a floppy disk, CDR, ZIP or whatever. You can add your theme to another computer in much the same way you back it up and restore it. Just locate the Templates folder on your second PC and copy your theme folder itself into the Templates folder.
A note about restoring from CD-ROM
Remember that files copied from a CD-ROM to your hard drive will be write protected or read only meaning that RealCart will not be able to update the files until the read only attribute is reset. For more information on how to do this please refer to this FAQ page.
Restoring your Stores and Themes
If you should ever have a crash and you have a recent store and or theme backup just copy these files back to their respective locations after reinstalling RealCart. Your key file will still be on your web site and you can retrieve a copy of it from your cart/js205 folder. (newer versions of the software may be in a js205 or js2xx folder)
If you installed RealCart to the default installation directory then you will want to copy your original store folder back to the folder:
C:\Program Files\RealCart.com\RealCart\Stores.
If you installed to a different folder you will need to locate the Stores folder on your hard drive and copy your store folder back into this location. For example, if you installed RealCart to F:\Internet and your store is called USBCity.com then you would copy your USBCity.com folder back to the Stores folder on your F: Drive like this:
F:\Internet\RealCart\Stores\USBCity.com.
As we said above, you cannot restore your store database by downloading files from your web site. The store database is not published to your web site so if you do not have a backup copy of your store folder you will have to redefine your store and products again by hand. Please backup your stores and themes!!
