Customizing your store
Common Customizations

Tweaks you can use

RealCart is the perfect shopping cart for the web site owner that craves customization. Some typical customizations will be featured in this section. These customizations are easy enough for anyone to do if they have a little patience and the ability to read and type. Although we will be editing the actual html code of the templates you do not need to go out and learn the html language. Using a text editor like Windows notepad.exe you will be able to make these simple changes, save (or copy) your template(s) and/or finished page(s) and then publish your store. It’s really just that easy.

As with any other customization you are on your own. RealCart technical support is designed to assist you with our templates the way we wrote them. We cannot support your own custom coding whether you need to know how to do it or if you need to know how to fix it if RealCart stops working after your changes. We recommend that you make a copy of a theme before you start customizing it. Then, as you make changes, make frequent backups of your customized theme in the event you change something and RealCart stops working. If this happens you can just revert back to your ‘last working copy’ of your custom theme.

If you hired a web designer to design your web site let him or her do your shopping cart customizations. Did you design your site? Whether you used FrontPage, DreamWeaver, notepad.exe or any other program to design your web site you can use the very same tool to customize RealCart. Just make a copy of one of the RealCart themes and start experimenting. Anything you can do with your regular web pages you can do with RealCart templates. Want to include a Macromedia Flash button in your cart pages? Great! Add it.

I know we just said this but we’ll repeat it because it is just that important, “Anything you can do with your regular web pages you can do with RealCart templates.” Just watch out for “nesting form tags” as described at the bottom of this page earlier in this chapter.
