Creating Sub departments
Sub departments have been a very requested feature in RealCart. Although the program does not directly support sub departments it is not difficult to implement. The best way to create sub departments is to follow these steps.
- Create all of your departments as upper-level by simply adding each department as you normally would as described in Section 4.5.1.
- Make sure that the departments you have defined will not change. (At least not soon.) Make sure you have not left any departments out and that you have all the departments you will ever have. (At least for awhile.)
- Using your favorite web page editor like FrontPage, DreamWeaver or Notepad.exe modify the file called catalog.html in your on-line store and rearrange your departments into main departments and sub departments. In other words, create some department headings and under these headings list the individual departments in a smaller font or what ever way you want to indicate them as sub departments.
- Save the catalog.html file in your current theme folder. This way it will not be overwritten every time you rebuild your store.
Thats all there is to it. We fully plan to bring you sub-departments in our next major version. Dont count on seeing RealCart 3.0 until 2005 or later. In addition to simply rearranging your catalog.html page you can create additional main department pages and integrate them into your cart folder. Web shoppers can go to these pages by clicking a link on your customized catalog.html page and then from these added pages click on a subdepartment link and go straight to the department page they want.
RealCart was built on simple HTML for the very purpose of customization. Use your imagination and configure your store pages any way that you see fit! Your creativity is your only limit!
