Publishing your store
FTP Initial Directory
Determining what this value should be
RealCart needs to know the exact location of your web documents on your FTP server. If you do not specify this setting correctly you will receive errors each time you try to publish. This is not something you should try to guess. Instead, you should figure out what it is before moving further. It must be correct if you plan to use the built-in publishing capabilities of RealCart. Sometimes this value is simply left blank. If you are not sure what this setting is try publishing your store with the FTP Initial Directory left blank. If you get errors or if it doesnt work you will probably need to determine what the directory is and enter it into the program.
Web hosting ISPs sometimes will call this the web documents folder. It can also be referred to as your html folder. Basically both of these terms mean the same thing; This is where your web pages are stored on your FTP server. The name of this folder was likely provided to you whenever you got your setup information from your web hosting ISP. Try to locate your original setup information and look for information regarding your web space, the directory structure, your web documents folder name or anything regarding where you are to upload your web content.
A lot of times the folder that your web documents belong in is the same folder that you are connected to upon establishing an FTP connection to your server. If this is the case try leaving the FTP Initial Folder value empty. If you leave this folder value blank or just enter a slash (/), try publishing with the publishing wizard and you get errors like cannot create folder or folder/file doesnt exist, then you likely need to specify a folder name. If you do not leave this field blank it should almost always begin with a slash. See the examples below.
FTP Initial Directory Examples
The FTP Initial Directory will be something similar to one of the following examples:
/www
/usr/home/htdocs
/usr/youruserid/www
/etc/httpd/public_html
Here are a few examples of what this setting IS NOT:
C:\My Documents\webpages (This is a folder on your PC)
ftp.myserver.com (This is a server address)
216.219.253.211 (This is an IP address)
Entering or changing the FTP Initial Directory
Once you find the folder that your web site pages are in then you have found the correct folder to define as your FTP Initial Directory. To specify the FTP Initial Directory just open the publishing wizard and click the Advanced... button as described at the top of the previous page. The FTP Initial Directory setting is the first one on the Advanced FTP Settings dialog after you click the Advanced... button.
Need help?
If you need some help determining the name of this folder here are two things to try:
Ask your web hosting ISP by sending this convenient form letter.
Determine what your FTP Initial Directory is on your own.
Ask RealCart. If you provide our tech staff your login info (username/password) we would be delighted to log in to your FTP server to determine the best setting for you and provide you with this information free of charge.
We would hate to have you get discouraged with our program because of this one setting. If you have tried both of the above methods of determining what this setting should be and still cannot figure it out simply send an Ask RealCart request including your FTP username and password and we will attempt to log on to your FTP server to determine what this setting is for you.
